The European Union plans to adopt the tenth package of sanctions against Russia on the anniversary of the start of a full-scale Russian invasion – February 24.
This was announced on February 2 in Kyiv by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. She promised Ukraine accession to the EU, and also officially announced new sanctions against Russia.
Sanctions
Before February 24, the anniversary of the Russian invasion, “we want to complete the tenth package of sanctions,” von der Leyen said at a press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv.
The European Union expects to impose new sanctions against Russia before February 24, the anniversary of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. This was reported by Agence France-Presse, said the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, who is on a visit to Kyiv.
Earlier, Reuters wrote that a new package would be prepared for the anniversary of the start of the war. Lithuania and Poland, the hard-line countries, intend to achieve sanctions against the Russian nuclear sector and restrictions on the diamond trade.
Von der Leyen herself said that the next 10 EU sanctions package will include measures aimed at combating circumvention of previously introduced restrictions.
According to Bloomberg, the EU is also preparing sanctions against Belarus for the country’s participation in the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Possible restrictions include a ban on the export of dual-use goods and technologies used for military purposes, as well as sanctions on oil, coal, steel and gold.
The ninth package of EU sanctions came into force in December. It included a ban on the export of aviation engines to Russia, the revocation of broadcasting licenses from five TV channels, restrictions against officials and Russian propagandists.
In mid-January, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, noted that Western countries had imposed “the strongest sanctions in history” against Russia, because of which the Russian economy was threatened with “a decade of regression.”
Ukraine in the EU
During the joint meeting of the European Commission and the government of Ukraine in Kyiv, she stressed that the European integration movement of Ukraine helps not only Ukraine, but also the European Union itself.
The day Ukraine became a candidate [на вступ до ЄС] – was a new beginning for Ukraine, but it was also a new beginning for the EU,” von der Leyen said.
She also expressed her conviction that the European Commission will assist Ukraine in moving closer to the EU “until the day when the Ukrainian flag will be raised where it is supposed to be – in front of the Berlamont building in Brussels” (the building in which the European Commission is located and in front of which there are full flags EU members).
Recall that on February 2, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen arrived in Kyiv for the fourth time since the beginning of the Russian full-scale invasion.
This time, a team of European commissioners came with her.
