Ex-president of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili during an online court session showed what state he is in.
According to him, he lost more than 40 kg.
On February 1, a regular court session was held on a petition for a reprieve and dismissal of Saakashvili. Saakashvili joined the court session because of the video link.
After Saakashvili began to take off his shirt, the broadcast was interrupted.
Currently, Saakashvili, who is in the Viva med clinic in Tbilisi, has been transferred to intensive care due to deteriorating health.
A few days ago, Saakashvili was diagnosed with coronavirus – then the clinic said that there was no need to transfer him to intensive care and the disease was in a mild form.
The third president of Georgia is in the Vivamed prison medical clinic, but despite the obvious deterioration in his health, Saakashvili is denied transfer to the intensive care unit. The former Ukrainian official has been behind bars since October 1, 2021, when he returned to Georgia.
Saakashvili was sentenced by the current Georgian authorities to 6 years in prison on charges of abuse of power. However, he and his supporters characterize his sentence as politically motivated.
History of Saakashvili
Former Georgian President Saakashvili is imprisoned in his homeland. Back in 2018, he was convicted in absentia, and upon arrival in Georgia in October 2021, he was immediately arrested and transferred to a penitentiary.
Then, in protest, he began a hunger strike, his health deteriorated. In the end, Saakashvili was transferred from Rustavi Prison to the Gldani Prison Hospital in Tbilisi, although he himself insisted on being transferred to a civilian hospital. After another deterioration in health, the Ministry of Justice of Georgia offered to transfer Saakashvili to a military hospital, after which he temporarily agreed to end the hunger strike.
Lawyers, relatives and supporters of Saakashvili note the deterioration of the politician’s health. Georgia’s Special Penitentiary Service released a video from Saakashvili’s chamber in December alleging his “speculation” and “rude attitude” towards staff. Saakashvili’s former press secretary said that they were “putting on a show” out of his fortune.
In 2018, Saakashvili was sentenced in absentia to 3 years in prison in the case of abuse of power in pardoning those convicted of the murder of businessman Sandro Girgvliani and to 6 years in prison in the case of the 2005 beating of MP Valery Gelashvili.
Saakashvili is also accused of embezzlement of budgetary funds and illegal crossing of the state border. In addition, after his return, the Georgian authorities stated that he allegedly and his associates “planned the murder of oppositionists in order to provoke unrest and blame the authorities,” although there are no proceedings on this fact.
