Actor Alec Baldwin and gun consultant Hannah Gutierrez-Reid have been officially charged by the New Mexico State Attorney’s Office with the manslaughter of cameraman Galina Gutchins, who died on the set of Rust.
It is reported by CNN.
According to the channel, Baldwin and Gutierrez-Reed are charged with two counts of manslaughter. If the jury finds them guilty, then the actor and consultant will be convicted of only one of them. Which of the two counts is more appropriate is for the jury to decide. The first paragraph provides for up to 18 months in prison, the second – up to five years in prison.
Baldwin’s lawyer declined to comment. Earlier, when it became known that prosecutors would indict Baldwin, his lawyer told CNN that he considered the decision “a terrible mistake of justice.”
In turn, lawyer Gutierrez-Rid said that the prosecutor “completely misinterpreted the facts and came to the wrong conclusions.”
Ukrainian cinematographer Galina Gatchins died on the set of the film Rust in October 2021 as a result of a gun shot that was used as a prop, but turned out to be loaded with live ammunition.
The gun at the time of the shot was in the hands of Baldwin, he himself claimed that he did not pull the trigger. However, forensic scientists in their report stated that the weapon could not have fired on its own.
Hannah Gutierrez-Reid, according to prosecutors, did not insist on safety training for Baldwin, did not check every cartridge, and also did not follow the rules for safe storage of ammunition.
