14 German Leopard 2A6s, which Berlin undertook to supply the Armed Forces of Ukraine, belong to the 203rd tank battalion of the 21st tank brigade of the Bundeswehr.
This was reported by Westfalen Blatt. According to the source, the regular number of tanks for this military unit in Augustdorf in the north-west of the country between Hannover and Dortmund is 44 units.
How many of them are in service is unknown.
On January 25, the German government officially confirmed the dispatch of a company of Leopard-2 tanks to Ukraine. It is important that 14 vehicles will come from the Bundeswehr. This means that, firstly, they are combat-ready, and secondly, they are a modern modification of the 2A6 – with a more powerful gun, enhanced armor protection and improved situational awareness. In addition, Germany will allow the supply of tanks of its production to NATO allies.
To date, 12 EU countries have declared their desire to transfer them to Kyiv. Among them are Poland (it will also send 60 PT-91 Twardy tanks), Finland, Norway, the Netherlands, Spain, Denmark and Portugal.
In total, there are 2,000 Leopard 2 tanks in various modifications on the balance sheet of European states. Kyiv expects to receive 100 of them. Such agreements were reached last week during a summit at the Ramstein air base, where the allied countries discussed military support for Kyiv.
Other countries also announced their intention to support Ukraine with heavy weapons: the UK will send 14 Challenger tanks to Kyiv. Paris does not exclude the supply of Leclerc heavy attack tanks.
