Long-term adviser to Merkel for the supply of fighter jets to Ukraine

The head of the Munich Conference recalled that, according to international law, foreign forces are allowed to provide weapons to Ukraine, especially battle tanks, as well as aircraft.

Angela Merkel’s former foreign policy adviser and current chairman of the Munich Security Conference, Christoph Heusgen, supports giving Ukraine fighter jets to defend against Russian attacks, ARD reports.

“I believe that the supply of fighter jets is sufficient to better protect Ukraine from Russian attacks,” he said.

According to Heusgen, it is possible to discuss supplying Kyiv with American F-16 fighters or Soviet-designed fighters from the old stocks of the German Democratic Republic.

The head of the Munich Conference also recalled that, according to international law, foreign forces are allowed to provide weapons to Ukraine, especially battle tanks, as well as aircraft.

Recall that the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz claims that the question of the possible provision of fighter jets to Ukraine has not yet arisen.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius also spoke earlier against providing Ukraine with German fighters. “It’s out of the question,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dutch Foreign Minister Wopke Hoekstra said last week that the Netherlands “has no qualms” about discussing a request for F-16s if one comes from Ukraine, and the Slovak government has spoken directly about on plans to give Ukraine Soviet MiG-29s.
