Helsinki now collects information about social conditions in the Russian Federation and the Russians themselves seeking asylum.
Finland’s Migration Service has temporarily suspended the decision to grant asylum to Russian citizens who avoid mobilisation. This is what the representative of the asylum department, Juha Simile, said in an interview with Helsingin Sanomat, published on Friday, January 27.
He noted that this decision is due to the fact that Finland is still collecting information about social conditions in Russia and the applicants themselves. This data collection could be completed in the next two weeks.
“It is necessary to know who the mobilization really concerns, what it means to go to the front, and what are the consequences of refusing to serve in the army – whether it leads to punishment, imprisonment or something else,” the official said. explained.
According to him, the result of consideration of applications for asylum may differ depending on where in Russia a person has settled and what position he occupies.
He added that Russia’s war against Ukraine has affected the number of asylum applications filed by Russians. He also influenced the application criteria.
Between September and December 2022, that is, since the mobilization in Russia began, 743 Russians requested asylum in Finland, the official added.
Helsinki is awaiting a decision from the European Asylum Agency on whether a person’s refusal to participate in hostilities is enough to grant them political asylum.
