The historical center of the port city of Odessa is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List under threat
This means that the Ukrainian city of Odessa will be under the protection of UNESCO,” explained First Deputy Foreign Minister Emine Dzhaparova.
She called this UNESCO decision a diplomatic victory for Ukraine.
The inclusion of the cultural and historical monument “Historical Center of the Port City of Odessa” on the World Heritage List under threat will protect the cultural heritage of Odessa and save it from Russian invaders who have repeatedly directed their missile attacks on the city, the government commission said in a statement.
In August 2022, the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy initiated the inclusion of the historical center of Odessa on the UNESCO World Heritage List under an accelerated procedure.
In October, Ukraine officially submitted the nomination file “Historical Center of the Port City of Odessa” to UNESCO for consideration, and President Volodymyr Zelensky called for an extraordinary session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee to include the historical center of Odessa on the list.
