Neutral Switzerland is close to being allowed to re-export its weapons to Ukraine.

Switzerland may allow the re-export of its weapons to Ukraine. The Security Commission of the Swiss National Council approved an initiative to change the country’s legislation to allow the re-export of Swiss weapons from third countries to Ukraine.

Switzerland maintains strict military neutrality and has so far refused to issue such permits.

Under the current law on military property, exports cannot be approved if the receiving country of the weapon is in a state of armed conflict.

The proposal to change the law was supported by 14 members of the commission, 11 parliamentarians were against.

The commission said in a statement that no-re-export declarations signed by buyers of Swiss weapons should be canceled in the event of a violation of the prohibition on the use of force under international law.

Most members of the commission believe that Switzerland should contribute to European security and, accordingly, provide more support to Ukraine. In their opinion, the proposed amendments are in line with the law on neutrality, since they do not allow the direct export of military equipment to conflict zones, but only concern declarations banning re-export from countries that buy Swiss weapons.

Changes to the law would require the approval of both houses of parliament.

This change will primarily allow Germany, Denmark and Spain to be allowed to transfer Swiss weapons to Ukraine.
