Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valery Zaluzhny inherited $1 million from the United States, after which he transferred all the money to the Ukrainian army.
The New York Times wrote that Zaluzhny inherited from Ukrainian-American Hryhoriy Stepanets.
In January, the commander-in-chief donated the entire amount received to the armed forces of Ukraine.
The press service of the Armed Forces of Ukraine confirmed this information, writes Zn.ua.
The NYT wrote about Zaluzhny’s legacy in an article about how Ukrainians help the army.
In particular, the publication mentioned a survey conducted last fall by the Ukrainian public broadcaster Public Media. It showed that about a quarter of all Ukrainians, or 24%, said they donated money directly to the military during the war.
Over the past year, 22.3 billion hryvnias, or about 500 million dollars. enterprises and individuals donated directly to the army, according to the NBU. This significantly exceeded charitable contributions within Ukraine for humanitarian assistance, which amounted to 920 million hryvnias, or 20 million dollars.
One of the largest such organizations, Come Back Alive, has collected UAH 5.3 billion or $132 million for the military.
The Serhiy Prytula Charitable Foundation raised UAH 3.5 billion, or $87 million.
Organizations such as this fund often raise money for specific purchases, such as the Bayraktar TB2 strike drone for the air force.
