The hands of the doomsday clock, symbolizing the threat of a global catastrophe, have been moved 10 seconds closer to midnight. Now they show 23.58.30.
The creators of the doomsday clock cited Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the increased risk of nuclear escalation as the main reason for moving the hands forward.
Also, the decision to move the arrows was influenced by continuing factors such as climate change and the inability of mankind to create global institutions to reduce the risks associated with technological and biological threats.
So close to midnight – the symbol of a global nuclear catastrophe – the hands of the clock have never been before.
During the war in Ukraine, Russian officials, notably President Vladimir Putin, repeatedly threatened to use nuclear weapons.
The Doomsday Clock is a project of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, which has existed since 1947. The decision to move the arrows (or to leave them in place) is made annually by the magazine’s board of directors with the participation of experts and scientists.
Further from midnight (23.43), the hands of the clock were after the end of the Cold War. Over the past 10 years, the clock has been moved six times – it has only moved forward.
