In Ukraine, for the first time, lungs were transplanted to a person on their own. The operation lasted 16 hours and ended on the night of January 24th.
Since seven in the morning the patient has been breathing on his own, said doctor Oleg Samchuk.
This is the first time doctors transplanted lungs in Ukraine without the help of foreign colleagues. The historic operation was performed by a team of Lviv doctors led by cardiac surgeons Roman Domashich and Igor Humenny. The operation lasted 16 hours, the lungs were transplanted due to the “mini-access” and without a heart-lung machine.
This is the second lung transplantation in Ukraine from a post-mortem donor. The previous one with the Poles was done in September 2021 also by the First Medical Association of Lviv. The patient feels great.
This time, not only the lungs were transplanted, but also the heart, liver and kidneys (a total of five organs). The heart was transplanted with the help of colleagues from the Heart Institute.
The donor was a 54-year-old man who died as a result of a stroke. After doctors diagnosed brain death, the family agreed to donate his organs to save the lives of five people.
Lungs received 56-year-old resident of Kiev Alex. He is 56 years old. He is the liquidator of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The patient himself is raising an 11-year-old son. He decided to have the operation so that his boy would have a dad.
The heart was received by 48-year-old Alexander from Zaporozhye. He suffered from dilated cardiomyopia. The man’s condition was close to critical.
The liver was transplanted to 50-year-old Valery, a resident of Transcarpathia, who suffered from cirrhosis.
Kidneys – 47-year-old Ivan from Transcarpathia and 44-year-old Love from the Carpathians. Both had been suffering from chronic glomerulonephritis for a long time.
Blessed memory of the donor! Thank you family for agreeing to organ harvesting! Thank you to all the medical teams involved in this no doubt historic transplant! The lungs were transplanted by: Roman Domashich, Igor Humenny, Ivan Miskiv, Viktor Tityuk, Bogdan Gel, Ilya Bratunets. Special thanks to Polish colleagues from Śląskie Centrum Chorob Serca/Silesian Center for Heart Diseases, who taught our specialists. Heart transplantation team – Heart Institute: Boris Todurov, Gavrila Kovtun, Sofia Chaikovskaya, says the FB site of the First Medical Association of Lviv.
