Rachel Bronson, president of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, explained that this means there are 90 seconds left before the “nuclear apocalypse point”.
The hands on the symbolic Doomsday Clock, which first appeared in 1947 on the cover of the American magazine Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, were moved 10 seconds closer to “nuclear midnight”. As the president of the publication, Rachel Bronson, said on Tuesday at a press conference in Washington, this means that there are 90 seconds left before the “nuclear apocalypse point”.
Today, this is the closest position of the hands of the Doomsday Clock to midnight in its history.
Bronson said this decision was made mainly in light of the situation around Ukraine. According to him, “the possibility of the conflict spiraling out of anyone’s control remains high.”
The Doomsday Clock is a project of the University of Chicago journal Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, started in 1947 by the creators of America’s first atomic bomb. Occasionally, the cover of the magazine published a picture of a clock, with an hour and minute hand, showing the minutes to midnight. The time remaining until midnight symbolizes the tension in the international situation and progress in the development of nuclear weapons. Midnight itself symbolizes the moment of nuclear cataclysm.
The decision to move the arrows was made by the journal’s Board of Directors with the help of invited experts, including, in particular, 18 Nobel Prize winners.
Recall that a year ago, in January 2022, the hands of the symbolic Doomsday Clock remained at approximately 100 seconds until nuclear midnight, which meant the death of humanity in a global catastrophe.
