The record low production of tea is due to problems in the supply of fertilizers and agrochemicals due to the government’s ban on their use.
Tea production in Sri Lanka fell in 2022 by 16% compared to the previous year and reached 251.5 million kg. DelhiMirror reported.
It is noted that this is the lowest figure since 1995 – then the country produced 246 million kg of tea.
According to the SriLankaTeaBoard, the country’s national tea regulator, the record low tea production is due to the problem in the supply of fertilizers and agrochemicals due to the government’s ban on their use.
According to experts, after lifting the ban in the summer of 2022, Sri Lanka can increase tea production in 2023 to 300 million kg.
Sri Lanka ranks third in the world in tea production after China and India, its share in world exports is 23%.
Tea export earnings in 2022, despite the decline in production, increased – due to rising prices – and reached $1.4 billion compared to $1.3 billion last year.
The Sri Lankan tea industry employs 135,000 workers, about 20 plantation companies, 590 tea factories, and 280 tea exporting companies.
Earlier it was reported that the tea company Ekaterra is leaving the Russian market. Since he was engaged in the production of branded drinks such as Lipton, Brooke Bond and Saito, they also stopped selling in Russia.
