Former President of Guatemala Alvaro Colom (2008-2012), aged 71, punished for corruption in 2021 United States of Americadied Monday of unexplained causes, former members of his cabinet said.
“The President has passed away. Alvaro Colom. I mourn his death and join in prayer for his eternal rest,” former Interior Minister Carlos Menocal (2010-2012) tweeted, without giving further details of the death of the former president, who was undergoing treatment for esophageal carcinoma.
“Working and studying next to him was a privilege. I understood and got to know Guatemala through him. A just person who dared (to make) the invisible visible (…). Goodbye, President Kolom,” a former presidential spokesman tweeted. , Fernando Barillas.
In July 2021, the former president was sanctioned by Washington, which included him on the list of “corrupt and undemocratic actors” of the so-called Central American Northern Triangle, or Engel’s list.
US sanctions
United States of America Alvaro Coloma was banned from entering his territory after being held liable by the courts in 2018 for alleged violations of a public transport contract made during his reign.
The Impunity Special Prosecutor’s Office indicted the former president for alleged anomalies in TransUrbano’s passenger prepaid system, amounting to about $35 million.
Alvaro Colom That same year, he was arrested along with most of his cabinet, and a judge later filed criminal charges against him. The ex-president was released from prison after posting bail.
The case was also investigated by the International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG), a UN body that operated from 2007 to 2019 and uncovered several high-profile corruption scandals in the Central American country. (AFP)
