THIS IS A HATE NEWS UPDATE. AP’s backstory follows below.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A teacher and two others, including at least one student, were injured Monday in a shooting at a Des Moines school on the edge of downtown.
A student and a teacher were taken to the hospital in critical condition, and another person was in stable condition, said Des Moines Police Sgt. Paul Parizek said.
The shooting happened at an educational program called Starts Right Here, which is affiliated with the Des Moines school district. The program, which helps at-risk youth, was founded by Will Holmes, a rapper whose stage name is Will Keeps.
Emergency crews were called to the school, which is in a business park that also houses the Des Moines office of the Social Security Administration, shortly before 1 p.m. About 20 minutes after the shooting, police said officers stopped a car about two miles away and took “several. suspects” in custody.
Gov. Kim Reynolds, who serves on an advisory board for Starts Right Here, said she was “shocked and saddened to hear of the shooting.”
“I have seen firsthand how hard Will Keeps and his staff work to help at-risk children through this alternative education program,” Reynolds said in a statement. “My heart breaks for them, these children and their families. Kevin and I are praying for their safe recovery.”
Nicole Krantz said her office near the school was locked shortly after the shooting and she saw someone running from the building and police following her on foot and in patrol cars.
“I just saw a lot of police cars coming from everywhere,” Krantz told the Des Moines Register. “It’s terrifying. We are all worried. I went into isolation, of course. We were told to stay away from the windows because we weren’t sure if they had caught the guy.”
