Western-made light tanks will be used for the first time in Ukraine. On January 4, 2023, France announced the delivery of AMX-10 RC armored vehicles (less than 20 tons) to the Ukrainian army. According to French Armed Forces Minister Sébastien Lecornu, they should be delivered by mid-March. Even if this type of equipment is similar to reconnaissance armored vehicles, without much firepower and therefore without the possibility of really changing the face of the war, this announcement strongly revived the debate, especially in Germany, on the supply of heavy tanks to Kiev. Until now, Berlin has always been reluctant, citing the risk of escalation. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki stepped up the pressure on Thursday, January 19, 2023, announcing that his country, which has German Leopard tanks, would be prepared to revoke the chancellor’s permission. “Either we do a quick deal or we do what’s right… Consent is a secondary issue.”.
