Amendments to the country’s law provide that Kyrgyz will become the state language.
The Parliament of Kyrgyzstan in the first reading adopted a bill on the state language. 75 MPs voted for him. It is reported RFE/RL (local branch Radio freedom) on Thursday, January 19.
The purpose of the bill is to establish a legal framework for the use of the state language and implementation of the language policy. Now the Kyrgyz language will be a working language for state bodies.
This document states that the government of Kyrgyzstan must work “in the state language, and in necessary cases – in the official language.”
In public institutions, if necessary, employees can use other languages.
The Parliament of Kyrgyzstan is also proposed to grant the right to approve the Kyrgyz alphabet and orthoepy rules.
In addition, toponymic names are proposed to be drawn in the state language and sent to official documents and media using transliteration.
The Russian language in Kyrgyzstan has the status of an official language. It is spoken by almost half of the population.
As we already reported, the State Duma warned Kyrgyzstan about “entering the path of Ukraine” if they start renaming Bishkek districts with Russian names.
We add that some banks in Kyrgyzstan have stopped servicing Russian bank cards of the Mir payment system after similar measures by Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.
