Much has been done to strengthen Ukraine’s defense potential, but the Russian Federation maintains a significant advantage in the number of troops, weapons and military equipment, the head of the Foreign and Defense Ministry noted.
Ukraine needs the supply of tanks from Western partner countries, in particular, German-made Leopard 2 tanks. This was stated in the joint statement of Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba and Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov on the need to strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities, published on Thursday, January 19.
“We welcome the bold and timely decision of the UK to transfer the first squadron of Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine. But this is not enough to achieve operational goals. Therefore, we appeal to the states that have Leopard 2 tanks in service, including Greece , Denmark, Spain, Canada, Netherlands, Germany , Norway, Poland, Portugal, Turkey, Finland, Sweden. We guarantee that we will use these weapons responsibly and exclusively to protect the territorial integrity of Ukraine within the internationally recognized borders, “the statement said.
The ministers also appealed to all of the above and other states with appropriate capabilities to join the initiative to create an international tank coalition in support of Ukraine and make their practical contributions to the initiative.
“Russia’s criminal aggression against Ukraine, which has been going on for almost a year, remains the most serious threat to international security and a challenge to the international community that has not occurred since World War II. This war brings particular danger to the Euro-Atlantic community, including given Russia’s unspecified goals to destroy the European security order and question the viability of democracy as a form of organization of public life,” the statement said.
The document states that much has been done to strengthen Ukraine’s defense potential, but the Russian Federation maintains a significant advantage in the number of troops, weapons and military equipment.
“That is why we appeal to all partner states that have already provided military assistance or are planning to provide it, with a call to significantly increase their practical contribution to strengthening Ukraine’s ability to defend itself, to bring this assistance to a new level of skill. One of the most pressing and most urgent needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine today is an improvement in their provision of modern armored vehicles and an increase in their firepower and maneuverability with the help of Western -style tanks,” the statement emphasizes.
On the eve of the deputies of the European Parliament appealed to the German authorities with a call to allow the transfer of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.
In turn, the media learned under what conditions German Chancellor Olaf Scholz agreed to transfer Leopard tanks to Ukraine.
