A “sign of unity” was installed in the square, where the name of Odessa was written with an “s”.
In the center of Berlin, a toponym appeared in honor of Odessa – OdesaPlatz. On Monday, January 16, DW reports.
The square is located in the urban district of Lichtenberg, in the Treskovalle district, at the intersection of Ehrenfelstrasse and Rheinsteinstrasse, near the Karlshorst Museum – the mansion where the surrender of Nazi Germany was signed in 1945.
According to local publication Berliner Zeitung, the German capital’s mayor’s office considers it a symbolic act.
“First, after the start of a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, many Germans changed their attitude towards the Russian Federation. Second, they highlight the role of Odessa as a city fighting for freedom and key to access in the Black Sea ,” the officials explained.
The city administration also emphasized that the spelling Odesaplatz with a letter s was deliberately chosen for the toponym, as it represents the correct Ukrainian transcription.
Note that Lichtenberg became the first of the 12 districts of the German capital, to name one of its objects in honor of Ukraine. Last summer, the Mayor of Berlin took the initiative to make every district do this.
Recall that German Defense Minister Christina Lambrecht resigned and sent a corresponding petition to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
