Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Peacebuilding, Rosemary DiCarlotold the UN Security Council this Friday that the war in Ukraine continues “without end” ahead of the first anniversary of the Russian invasion next February.
“The prevailing logic is military, with very little, if any, margin for dialogue at this time,” the official said in her speech.
Rosemary DiCarlo stated that the serious damage caused by the war in Ukraine pale in comparison to the consequences of the protracted conflict.
“It created a humanitarian and human rights catastrophe, traumatized a generation of children and accelerated the global food and energy crises,” the UN chief shared in her speech.
DiCarlo spoke about the latest attacks that took place during the Orthodox holidays in December. On these dates, the Russian Army carried out operations against the Dnieper, Kherson, Kirovograd and Kyiv, and attacks on Kharkov, Odessa, Lvov and Zhitomir were also recorded.
In this sense, by the New Year, all administrative regions of Ukraine were on air alert, and in the first half of 2023, there were also shelling with threats to civilians in Kherson, Bakhmut and Soledar.
The number of civilian casualties has so far risen to 18,098 since the invasion began, according to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), though they add that “the real numbers are likely to be much higher.”
Russia bombed Kramatorsk
Last Sunday, the Russian army said it had shelled two military barracks in Kramatorsk in eastern Ukraine, inflicting heavy casualties on its adversary in “retaliation” for a Ukrainian attack on Makiivka on New Year’s Day that killed 89 Russian soldiers.
“In response to the criminal shelling of the Kyiv regime in the first minutes of January 2023 (…), Russian forces carried out a retaliatory operation,” the daily report of the Russian Defense Ministry says.
“More than 600 Ukrainian soldiers were killed,” he added. This death toll has been denied by the Ukrainian army and AFP has also been unable to verify it through independent sources.
“Russian troops do not have the ability to carry out precision bombing,” Serhiy Cherevaty, one of the representatives of the Ukrainian army, said in a statement to local media.
