Chinacriticized for its lack of transparency about the COVID-19 epidemic, announced on Saturday at least 60,000 virus-related deaths since the nation’s medical restrictions were lifted a month ago.
After three years of applying some of the most draconian restrictions in the world, China abruptly lifted most of its coronavirus health regulations in early December after protests against the strictness of the measures in various cities around the country.
Since then, the number of patients has increased significantly.
Hospitals were overflowing with elderly patients, and crematoria received large numbers of corpses.
Despite this, authorities have so far reported only a small number of deaths.
December, Beijing revised its methodology for counting COVID-19 deaths to include only those who died directly from coronavirus-related respiratory failure.
This controversial change in methodology means that a large number of deaths are no longer recorded due to COVID-19.
criticism of WHO
World Health Organization (WHO) criticized this new Chinese definition of death for COVID-19 considering it “too limited”.
On Saturday, health authorities released their first non-exhaustive assessment of the epidemic since the lifting of health restrictions last month.
“In the period from December 8, 2022 to January 12, 2023, a total of 59,938 deaths from COVID-19 were recorded,” Jiao Yahui, head of the China Health Administration, said at a press conference at the National Health Commission of China.
He noted that of these deaths, 5,503 were directly caused by respiratory failure associated with COVID-19.
In addition, 54,435 deaths were due to comorbidities associated with COVID-19according to the same source.
This figure, which does not take into account deaths outside the hospital system, is probably an underestimate. (AFP)
