The Netanyahu government wants to reduce the power of the Supreme Court and gain control over the selection of judges.

Thousands protest against law reform in Tel Aviv. About this on Saturday, January 14, writes JPost.

The publication indicates that more than 80 thousand people took part in the demonstration, the organizers of the protest action speak of 100 thousand participants.

According to the publication, the rally was staged against the new government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his legal reform, which will give the Knesset more control over the judiciary. In particular, the Knesset will have the power to overrule Supreme Court decisions on laws and government decisions, as well as the appointment of its judges.

At the rally, the cousin of the current prime minister, Dan Netanyahu, spoke, comparing the government’s actions to the Nazi measures of the first half of the last century, which removed legal barriers to full power in Germany.

Israel’s parliament approved Netanyahu’s government at the end of December last year, which was formed based on the results of elections held in November. The new head of the Ministry of Justice, Yariv Levin, has proposed a legal reform that suggests that the powers of the High Court of Justice will be limited in relation to laws and government decisions, the cabinet will also have control in the selection of judges.

The opposition believes that the reform threatens Israel’s democratic foundations.

Recall that Benjamin Netanyahu was sworn in and officially became the prime minister of Israel for the sixth time.

Note that Israel will stop monthly payments to Ukrainians in February after the expiration of the relevant order.
