Former House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) says his party is done with Donald Trump.
“It’s fading fast,” he told CNN on Thursday. “He’s a proven loser who cost us the House in ’18, cost us the White House in ’20, cost us the Senate over and over again, and I think we all know that.”
Ryan said he believes Republicans are “passing by” the former president, who has already announced his 2024 bid to return to the White House.
“I can’t imagine him getting the nomination, honestly,” Ryan said:
Trump’s political demise has been predicted time and time again since he threw his hat into the presidential ring in 2015. Yet he remains popular within his own party – and although recent polls show that this is declining , he is still considered the favorite for the nomination. . from 2024.
A CBS News poll released earlier this week found that two-thirds of GOP voters believe loyalty to Trump is “very” or “somewhat” important.
Ryan served as Speaker of the House during the first half of Trump’s term, and the two clashed frequently. Since leaving office in 2019, he has spoken out against Trump and said last year that “anyone who doesn’t call themselves Trump” has a better chance of winning the GOP White House in 2024.
He currently serves on the board of Fox Corp., the parent company of Fox News.
