Incidents in the Nord Stream and Russia’s use of energy as a “weapon” require action to reduce potential vulnerabilities, Western politicians believe.
NATO and the EU have created a task force to strengthen the protection of critical infrastructure in response to last year’s attack on gas pipelines Nord Stream and Russian actions. Reuters reported this on January 11.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the explosion of pipelines in the Baltic Sea in September of last year showed the need to “deal with a new type of threat.”
“This is a task force where experts from NATO and the European Union will work together to identify the main threats to our critical infrastructure, to study the strategic weaknesses we have,” said the head of the EC, speaking in Brussels with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
He specified that the task force will first put forward proposals for transportation, energy, digital and space infrastructure.
According to Stoltenberg, the initiative will be part of expanding cooperation between NATO and the EU.
“The stability and protection of critical infrastructure is an important part of our joint efforts, whether in the case of President Putin’s use of energy as a weapon, or … sabotage of pipelines Nord Stream”he pointed out.
Recall that at the end of September, the authorities of Denmark and Sweden reported gas leaks in two strings Nord Stream near the island of Bornholm, which occurred due to explosions.
Later, the Swedish authorities confirmed the fact of sabotage on gas pipelines – the investigation found the remains of explosives.
