This Friday, the Bolivian government demanded that the opposition region Santa Cruz to replace its governor, Luis Fernando Camacho, after he was imprisoned last week for his alleged role in Evo Morales’ departure from the presidency in 2019.
Ivan Lima, who is Minister of Justice, confirmed that the law “clearly provides for the figure of a Lieutenant Governor who can take over the role in the event of a temporary absence, as happens in this situation.”
Luis Fernando Camachoone of the biggest opponents of the leftist government, was arrested on December 28 and transferred to La Paz in a trial called by the ruling party and charged as a “coup” against Evo Morales. He is considered one of the instigators who allegedly contributed to the street protests that forced the ex-president to resign.
Lima’s minister said he was warned to take legal action if the regional legislature and the Santa Cruz government did not proceed with a temporary replacement.
“If the situation in Santa Cruz is not resolved next week, we are obliged to initiate a criminal case of breach of duty by the said authorities,” he said.
The Statute of Santa Cruz establishes two figures: the temporary absence of the governor and his replacement by the lieutenant governor, and the resignation for his permanent replacement. For 10 days after Camacho’s arrest, street protests have not stopped in the region.
demonstrations continue
A new mobilization uniting various sectors of Santa Cruz, Bolivia’s largest region, demanded the release of the region’s governor, Luis Fernando Camacho, accused of terrorism in a case related to the 2019 political crisis.
As always in the last days, various sections, including Catholic and evangelical believers, as well as other institutions, gathered in the main square to start their walk to Christ the Redeemer, a symbolic place where social gatherings are usually held.
“Democracy yes, dictatorship no”, “enough abuse”, “the resilience of the people of Santa Cruz is the national hope” were the refrains or the inscriptions on the banners that never ceased to insist on the release of Camacho.
Once at the Cristo Redentor, and after several speeches, some of the mobilized, mostly women, marched through the streets until they reached the police headquarters to hold a vigil.
