Detainee Ovidio Guzmán-López is the son of notorious criminal El Chapo. His supporters besieged the city of Culiacan and exchanged fire with security forces.
In the city of Culiacan in Mexico, on January 5, Ovidio Guzman-Lopez, the son of drug lord El Chapo (Shorty), who is serving a life sentence in a US prison, was arrested. The operation was accompanied by shooting and burning of vehicles, several bullets hit the plane of a local airline, reports BBC News.
As Mexican Defense Minister Luis Cresensio Sandoval said, before Guzman-Lopez was captured, he was under secret surveillance for six months with the help of American authorities. After his arrest, he was transferred to Mexico City.

According to law enforcement officials, the detainee headed the branch of the Sinaloa drug cartel, which was founded by his father. It is one of the largest underground organizations in the world involved in the production, smuggling and trade of drugs.
After learning about the drug lord’s arrest, riots broke out in the city. His supporters besieged Culiacan and clashed with law enforcement in the middle of the streets. Local authorities urged city residents not to leave their homes, and security forces blocked the streets.

Mexican airline Aeromexico said that on Thursday morning, as a result of the shooting, several bullets hit the fuselage of the plane, which was preparing to fly to Mexico City. No passengers or staff were injured.
The airport was closed after the incident. The Mexican Civil Aviation Agency said an Air Force aircraft was also damaged in Culiacan.
In 2019, Mexican authorities arrested Guzmán-López, but forced his release in order not to incite his supporters to violence.
The US State Department believes that Ovidio and his brother Joaquin own at least 11 methamphetamine laboratories in the state of Sinaloa, producing between 1300 and 2200 kg of drugs per month.
