The Russian Ministry of Defense is trying to shift the blame for the incident to the “DPR”, but on social networks they are talking about the “criminal negligence” of the military leadership.
The devastating strike on the Russian base in Makiivka, Donetsk region, on December 31 has drawn intense criticism of the Russian authorities and could undermine President Vladimir Putin’s authority. This was announced by the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) in a report for January 2.
It is noted that the Russian Ministry of Defense is likely to try to shift the blame for the incident to the officials of the “Donetsk People’s Republic” and the mobilized.
According to “DPR”, Russian military personnel breached operational security using personal mobile phones, allowing Ukrainian forces to deliver an accurate strike on the base.
However, the vague recognition of the strike by the Russian Ministry of Defense drew criticism from the Russian military command. Wagner military bloggers said the Russian military command facilitated the attack by Ukrainian forces by concentrating hundreds of troops in one area.
Other bloggers pointed out that the Russian command witnessed such attacks over the past 11 months, but showed “criminal negligence” and did not even try to disperse troops to Makeyevka.
ISW added that such military retreats would complicate Putin’s efforts to appease the pro-military community.
“Putin’s inability to respond to criticism and correct the shortcomings of Russia’s military campaign undermines his credibility as a practical military leader,” the experts concluded.
Recall that on New Year’s Eve, a vocational school in occupied Makeyevka, where mobilized soldiers of the Russian army were stationed, was destroyed.
According to preliminary data, as a result of the incident, about 400 military personnel died and 300 more were injured.
The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation said that the Armed Forces of Ukraine hit the military deployment site in Makeyevka with the HIMARS system, and acknowledged the deaths of 63 soldiers.
