The Palestinian Ministry of Health identified the first two victims of the year as Samer Khushia, 22, and Fuad Abed, 25, after closing 2022 as the deadliest year for Palestinians in West Coast occupied since 2006, 170 people died.
The first was shot in the chest and the second in the stomach and thigh in clashes that broke out in the village of Kafr Dan, near Jenin, which also wounded three.
Palestinian media reports that Khushiya was at least a member of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades and had his body wrapped in the group’s flag prior to burial.
Clashes with Palestinian militants from Kafr Dan came as Israeli forces moved in to destroy the homes of two Palestinians who attacked near the separation wall on September 14, killing 30-year-old Bar Falah, commander of the elite Nahal intelligence unit.
house demolition
The army confirmed at dawn an incursion into the village to demolish the houses of Ahmad Abed and Abul Rahman Abed, who died in a shootout with Israeli troops after the September attack.
The demolition of the homes of the families of Palestinian attackers is a common Israeli practice, but is widely condemned by international organizations as a form of collective punishment that violates human rights and international standards.
Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades and Islamic Jihad issued separate statements saying their men opened fire on Israeli soldiers in the area.
Eyewitnesses cited by the Palestinian media said that the soldiers broke into the village and besieged several houses while other soldiers took up positions on the rooftops of tall buildings before clashes broke out with Palestinian militants.
Since March 2022, the Israeli army has carried out almost daily raids on Palestinian cities, especially in the northern parts of the West Bank in Nablus and Jenin.
Dubbed Operation Breaking the Wave, the army stepped up these raids after a series of Palestinian attacks that resulted in 29 deaths on the Israeli side in all of 2022.
