Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, who became president for the third time, was sworn in after winning the election. His predecessor Jair Bolsonaro left Brazil.
In the capital of Brazil on Sunday, January 1, was the inauguration of President-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. The politician, who was elected from the leftist Workers’ Party and inaugurated for a third term as president, took the oath before the National Congress.
In his first speech as president, the politician criticized his predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro. According to da Silva, the previous authorities were responsible for reducing the resources allocated to education, health care and the protection of Brazil’s forests. Da Silva promised to address the environmental agenda, as well as improving the situation of small and medium-sized businesses.
This is the third presidential term for da Silva and the sixth time the politician has participated in the presidential election – he was elected in 2003 and re-elected in 2006. Lula did not run for a third term – according to Brazilian law , a person cannot be head of state for more than two consecutive terms. In 2017, the former president was sentenced to 9.5 years in prison on corruption charges, but he was later released, and in 2021, the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court dropped all charges against the politician.
The German president pledged support to da Silva to protect the rainforests
Da Silva’s inauguration was also attended by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier – he assured his colleague that Berlin is ready to support the new head of state in his “ambitious plans to protect rainforests.” On January 2, the German President intends to visit the Brazilian state of Amazonas, which is rich in tropical forests, where deforestation and fires have increased significantly during Bolsonaro’s leadership.
Da Silva’s inauguration ceremony was also attended by a Russian delegation led by the spokesperson of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation, Valentina Matvienko. He said he delivered a message to the Brazilian president from his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, and da Silva “confirmed his readiness and interest” to restart Russian-Brazilian economic, scientific, technical, environmental and other fields.
Bolsonaro did not admit defeat in the election and left the country
Da Silva won the second round of the presidential election in October with 50.9 percent of the vote, while Jair Bolsonaro received 49.1 percent of the vote. Known for his right-wing views and skepticism about the COVID-19 pandemic, Bolsonaro indirectly admitted defeat in the elections, saying that the post-election demonstrations of his supporters were “the result of anger and a sense of injustice in the way. the electoral process was fixed.”
According to the rules of the inauguration, the president-elect must be presented with a special bald head of his predecessor, but Bolsonaro did not attend the ceremony, having flown from Brazil to Florida a few days before. Before leaving, Bolsonaro posted an appeal to his supporters on social networks, saying “battles have been lost, but we will not lose the war,” and also urging them not to riot and to respect the country’s constitution.
On the day of da Silva’s swearing-in, Brazilian police detained a man with a knife and explosives – he tried to enter the esplanade. The inauguration took place under heightened security measures due to threats Lula received from supporters of his predecessor.
