The authoritarian leaders Stalin and Putin did not understand that the people living in a free country have their own will and beliefs.
Finnish President Sauli Niiniste compared Russian President Vladimir Putin to Stalin in his New Year’s speech. His appeal was published on the President’s website.
Niiniste said that 2022 has returned the country to the past, and the horrors of a great war have returned to Europe. According to Niiniste, Finnish foreign and security policy is now passing through a historic turning point.
“If Russia believes that a major threat will quickly bring Ukraine to its knees, they have made a serious error in their judgments. will arrive in Helsinki in two weeks. As leaders of countries with authoritative governance, they did not recognize Stalin and Putin are the main factors. The truth is that people living in a free country have their own will and beliefs. And a country working together is a great force,” he said.
The second mistake of the Russian Federation, he called the idea that European or Western compassion for the Ukrainian people will pass.
“Just the opposite has happened. Instead of just sympathizing, we feel this very strongly with the Ukrainians. We treat the Ukrainian cause as our own. And the support for Ukraine is only growing stronger. However, simply stating wrong assessments is does not answer the main question. How is it possible that the geographical border that runs through Europe is actually a border between two completely different worldviews? On this side of this border, it is impossible to imagine that a country can think that it can start of war against another. On the part of the Russian border, everything is different. The difference is important and ultimately comes down to respect for humanity and human life,” added Niiniste.
He also mentioned that all these years wars continued in the world and there was a lot of cruelty.
“Perhaps we – in Finland, the Nordic countries, Europe and the West in general – just want to silence ourselves thinking that cruelty will not reach us. Now it is coming closer to us. It makes us understand among us that not everyone is ready to accept our model of behavior that we consider correct. It forces us to learn to respond to other types of models and behaviors,” the President of the country stressed, adding that the worst of theirs is authoritarian and aggressive.
Recall that in December the Embassy of Finland in Moscow was “thrown down” by sledgehammers.
Before that, Finland announced another package of military aid to Ukraine worth 28.8 million euros.
