The brutal war in Ukraine makes the celebrations inappropriate. Also, residents of the Polish capital are asked to refrain from pyrotechnics.
Warsaw city authorities have decided not to hold a New Year’s celebration due to financial difficulties related to the war in Ukraine. This was announced by Warsaw City Hall representative Monika Beuth, reports Tvn24.pl.
According to him, due to the energy crisis, the authorities cannot afford to pay such expenses. The celebrations will also be inappropriate because of the war in neighboring Ukraine.
“In Ukraine, beyond our eastern border, there is a cruel, bloody, animalistic war, where people and civilians are dying every day. Therefore, now is not the moment to facilitate the organization of such special, fun events,” Beuth insists. .
He also encouraged Varsovians not to use firecrackers and fireworks on New Year’s Eve. First, because of the animals being afraid of the gunfire, and second because of the fact that it might cause the Ukrainians, who live in Warsaw to about 100,000, to have a bad association with the war. He emphasized that it is especially about Ukrainian children.
The Warsaw City Council joined the call of the city hall, which also called on the residents of the Polish capital not to use pyrotechnics on New Year’s Eve.
Earlier, the National Security and Defense Council warned Ukrainians that there could be shelling during the holidays.
