The Serbian leader spoke to Serb protesters in Kosovo and urged them to end the blockade.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said Kosovo Serbs have promised to begin dismantling the barricades on the morning of Thursday, December 29, Reuters reports.
It will take 24 to 48 hours, he said.
“It’s a long process. It’s going to take time,” Vucic said.
Serbs in northern Kosovo built barricades and blocked roads for about three weeks after Kosovo police arrested former policeman Dejan Pantic. His release was one of the main demands of the protesters.
On Wednesday night, Vučić reportedly called on Serbs in Kosovo to end the blockade after receiving “strong guarantees” from the European Union and the United States.
The situation in northern Kosovo has escalated since December 10 after the detention of former Serbian policeman Dejan Pantic, accused of violence against officials preparing local elections. It should be noted that the elections were scheduled after approximately 600 Serbian representatives left the Kosovo authorities in protest against the government’s decision not to recognize Serbian license plates.
