Tehran does not agree to sell ballistic weapons to Moscow, but gives it its UAVs, Kirill Budanov said.
Iran refuses to support Russia in the supply of ballistic missiles, but it has sold about 1.7 thousand drones that the invaders use to target Ukrainian energy facilities. This was said by the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine Kirill Budanov in an interview with the New York Times.
He noted that the Kremlin offered the scientific knowledge of Iran’s military industry to convince Tehran to support Russia with ballistic missile supplies.
“Iran is in no hurry to do this for obvious reasons, because as soon as Russia launches the first missiles, the pressure of sanctions on Iran will increase,” explained the head of Ukrainian intelligence.
Budanov added that Russia acquired 1,700 Shahed explosive drones from Iran, which were delivered in tranches.
The Russian Federation has released around 540 drones to date for tactical strikes along the front line and on energy infrastructure.
The GUR chief noted that most of the strike drones were shot down before they reached their targets. However, these drones are cheap: in Iran, the cost of production is about seven thousand dollars per unit, although it is not known how much Tehran sells these weapons to Russia.
As previously reported, the Russians have begun launching an Iranian-made Shahed-131 drone, which is a smaller version of the Shahed-136, across Ukraine.
