Charles Michel said it was worth maintaining a communication channel with Putin “to try to manage the humanitarian situation.”
The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, said it was necessary to maintain communication with the head of the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin, to resolve humanitarian issues. He said this in an interview with journalist Alexei Venediktov, published on December 23 on the RTVI YouTube channel, TASS reports.
“I think we need to talk to Putin, we need to maintain communication. Ever since I was Prime Minister of Belgium, I have been in regular contact with Putin. I have maintained channels of communication with Putin, although some times months now I have been I didn’t communicate with him,” said Charles Michel.
According to him, “it is worth keeping this channel of communication to try to manage the humanitarian situation, try to argue and challenge the position.”
The President of the European Council also said that the contacts with the Russian Federation make it possible “to support the work of the UN and UN Secretary General António Guterres in terms of the possibility of transportation of agricultural products and fertilizers through of the sea, which can be exported to developing countries, which will reduce the risk of famine worldwide.
“I want to say that there are different goals in the negotiations with the Kremlin: short-term goals, the goal of avoiding a serious escalation of the conflict, including the nuclear threat, this is usually the main goal, as well also the objectives related to the international situation and the risks of a food crisis, accompanied by negotiations between the members of the UN, Ukraine and Russia. Through these channels, the leaders of Europe have the opportunity to convey to Putin how they see the situation from their point of view,” said Charles Michel.
Remember, as reported by the American Institute for the Study of War, Putin is trying to absolve himself of responsibility for a long war.
