Above a slightly faded bouquet of artificial flowers, two slightly rusty license plates read: “Romain, 21”. This roadside memorial is known to drivers who go between department 942 Lumbres and Saint-Omer (Pas-de-Calais). Some also know he is there to remember the horrific accident on 8th April 2011 which claimed the life of Romain Boulogne, a young man from Moringham, near Saint-Omer.. “We hope it’s thought provoking, that people relax when they see it.says Marie-Claude, his mother. They should tell themselves that a life has been lost here, at the age of 21. This place is for people to remember.”
Initially, Boulon’s family decided to place a black figure near the accident site. Much more visible, it was deemed dangerous by the prefecture. The small, very sober monument that replaced it was preserved for ten years by the Romain family. “We go there every year…
