“In the morning, I open one eye and hope that Pierre is asleep. I have a stomach ache, another day. Pierre is Beatrice’s son, he is autistic with mental retardation. His mother, Beatrice, takes care of him and her two other children alone. At the age of 12, he finally gets a place in the reception structure. Her son safe, Beatrice breaks down and attempts suicide. Too busy keeping his family at arm’s length, he doesn’t know he’s burned out, meaning completely physically and psychologically exhausted.
“I just had to stop, I couldn’t take it anymore”, he recalls. He is being treated in a psychiatric hospital. In 2020, a ministerial report shows that 62% of carers have already experienced intense burnout, 50% feel lonely and see their health being affected. Two out of three have sacrificed some of their leisure time.
