Good news, but a reality marked by the constant Islamist threat. This is the conclusion that can be drawn from reading the latest report by Europol, the European Criminal Police Agency, on the terrorist threat in the Union in 2021.
The good news is that across all ideologies combined (from Islamism to the ultra-right, including the extreme left and separatists), there has been a significant drop in the number of attacks and attempted attacks that have failed or failed in the European Union. That’s 15 tackles or drafts in 2021, compared to 57 in 2020 and 55 in 2019. But these statistics at the same time emphasize that the Islamist movement is still the most dangerous in Europe. The decline in 2021 is indeed explained by a collapse in the number of attacks and attack plans by far-left or pro-independence groups.
