Executive Director Flora Tristan Peruvian Women’s Center, Liz Melendez, rejected statements by Women’s Minister Nancy Tolentino and pointed to a lack of interest in the issue of violence against women. In addition, he clarified that one of the most serious problems in these cases is impunity.

“Violence against women receives a lot of attention. The anti-violence agenda has been lowered. There are other problems that really worry the country. But there are structural issues like this one and others that are completely devoid of priority. [SIC] and negligence on the part of the authorities and failure on the part of the state to comply with so-called enhanced due diligence, which is a term established by the International Court of Human Rights, where in all cases of violence against women, the State and its authorities are obliged to act with greater speed than usual, taking into account attention to the context of risk,” he said in News extension from PTR.

“If we go to the norms that have been approved, then they are not bad. But their implementation remains a big problem. What happens is that by paying little attention, the victims can go back in their attempts to judge, to feel insecure. Impunity ultimately signals tolerance in the face of violence”, he added.

“Only 30% of women who have been victims of violence go to the authorities”

On the other side, Melendez He noted that only 30% of women subjected to violence go to the authorities, while the rest abstain due to shame or stigmatization.

“One of the big problems with gender-based violence against women is impunity. Various human rights committees have recommended that the state improve women’s access to justice and reduce impunity (…) Access to justice is not secured and there is little evidence that women’s trust in public authorities. Only about 30% of women who have been subjected to violence turn to the authorities with a statement about it.. And among the reasons for not reporting is the fear of stigmatization, shame and the thought that nothing will happen, ”he concluded.
