Neighbors who live near 9th October Avenue in San Juan de Lurigancho have been working for several hours to place sandbags in the area. With this action, they seek to prevent their houses from flooding with water in the face of a possible flood of the Rimak River, the flow of which has increased in a few days due to the passage of the river Cyclone Yaku.
Members of the municipality of Lima and San Juan de Lurigancho were also involved in the contingency work, as at any moment there is concern that water could cause severe flooding on the avenue connecting the area to central Lima.
“We were given 150 sandbags. so that the water does not flood the houses, as it was six years ago. Yesterday we didn’t have this problem, it was raining, but not like this. Today, yes, since lunch, all the neighbors are attentive, at first we bought sand and bags, but the municipality of the city Saint John Lurigancho supports us, but we will need more help,” said a neighbor named Ricardo Ruiz. News RPP.
Ruiz stressed the solidarity and support of the neighbors in the sandbag work. In addition, he indicated that they would continue this work in the early morning.
SJL Mayor asks for help
The Rimak River is “in centimeters” from the spill. The mayor of San Juan de Lurigancho, Jesus Maldonado, warned about this after the flow increased in recent hours due to rains caused by Cyclone Yacu.
“The Rimak River has already eaten up the entire bank, we are placing some bags that, by nature, will not be of much use, but we are doing the necessary work of redirecting, even a little, in case We think that if the flow increases even more, this a matter of a few hours, and we would like to ask the Minister of Defense for the military to come to our aid,” said the mayor in the program Las Cosas como Son de RPP Noticias.
Jesús Maldonado criticized people who stay near the Rimac River just to take pictures. In this sense, he urged people to get out of there for safety.
