They condemn police attacks on journalists covering the protest in Lima.

A reporter and photojournalist were attacked by police this Saturday while covering an anti-government march in Lima, where agents also “restricted” coverage of a press group that documented police “excesses” by denouncing the National Association of Journalists. Peru (PNA).

“Police agents attacked photojournalist Juan Zapata from the Wayka portal while he was filming violent actions against protesters (…) He points out that they insulted him, searched his belongings and hit him on the head and camera, damaging the lens,” ANP. A few hours later, reporter Paola Ugas of the Spanish newspaper ABC was also “ambushed and beaten” by the police, the ANP reported, and the journalist explained EFE.

Regarding this latest case, the association shared a video of a dozen uniformed men surrounding a protester and one of them pushing him until he falls to the ground, where he is beaten with a baton.

Journalists attacked during protests

The ANP reported last Friday that a total of 153 journalists have been attacked while covering anti-government protests in Peru since they began last December.

The organization specified that there were 94 attacks on journalists in January alone, most of them in Lima, with police agents being the main aggressors.

An anti-government demonstration this Saturday gathered thousands of Peruvians from across the country in the capital to demand the resignation of President Dina Boluarte, early elections this year and the convening of a constituent assembly.

Although the march began peacefully, agents used tear gas to disperse protesters who threw stones and fireworks at police.

In less than two months, 69 people have died as a result of social protests, including 47 protesters who died in clashes with law enforcement forces, a police officer and about twenty people who died in demonstration-related events such as cuts and roadblocks.
