Scientists have noted that da Vinci was one of the first naturalists to understand and explain the origin of sedimentary rocks.
In an iconic self-portrait by Italian Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci, researchers have discovered a new species of yeast from the genus Blastobotrys. The painting was painted in 1515. It was reported by Forbes.
The finding led to a new name Blastobotrys davincii.
“Today, about 10 thousand pages of Leonardo da Vinci’s personal notes have survived, most of them written between 1470 and 1519. In some of them, da Vinci describes rocks and ledges which was seen during his travels in Tuscany, Romagna and the Alps. The notes also describe his experience as an engineer when he oversaw the construction of large irrigation canals crossing the Apennines and the Po valley. He developed a passion for fossils – people brought him bags full of fossilized shells so he could make his sketches during his stay in Milan” the scientists said.
It can be noted that Leonardo da Vinci was one of the first naturalists to understand and explain the origin of sedimentary rocks and recognized fossils – petrified remains of animals, for example.
Also in his writings, he explained the formation of sandstone by hardened layers of sand deposited along ancient seas.
Earlier it was reported that scientists from Italy are sure that the found sketch with the image of Christ belongs to the hand of Leonardo da Vinci.
