Daily activity can be as beneficial to health as regular exercise.
Scientists at the Charles Perkins Center at the University of Sydney say a few short bursts of physical activity a day can replace the gym and reduce the risk of premature death, thereby extending life. The Daily Mail writes about it.
The researchers measured the health benefits of “vigorous intermittent physical activity,” or VILPA. These are very short bouts of vigorous activity – from one to two minutes. But it is important that a person is happy to do them every day.
Examples include running to stop to catch the bus, power walking while running errands, or playing energetically with children.
The study used data from wrist trackers to measure the activity of more than 25,000 “non-athletic” Britons over a week. After that, the health data of the participants was monitored for seven years.
As it turned out, just three to four one-minute doses of VILPA per day were associated with a 40 percent reduction in all-cause and cancer deaths, as well as a 49 percent reduction in the risk of death from cardiovascular disease. In particular, heart attack or stroke.
“Our study shows that benefits similar to high-intensity interval training (HIIT) can be achieved by increasing the intensity of casual activities performed as part of daily life, and more many are better. A few very short sets totaling three to four minutes per day can make a big difference, and there are many daily activities that can be tweaked to raise your heart rate by a minute or even more,” said study lead author Emmanuel Stamatakis.
He argues that most adults aged 40 and over do not participate in regular exercise or sports, but daily activity can be good for health.
“Increasing the intensity of daily activities does not require time, preparation, club membership and special skills. It simply involves increasing the speed while walking or doing housework with little effort ,” said the scientist.
