Ships without insurance have no chance of passing through the Turkish straits, the country’s authorities recalled.

Crude oil tankers that cannot provide effective protection and compensation insurance (P&I) cannot pass through the Turkish straits. On Friday, December 9, Anadolu reported with reference to the General Directorate of Maritime Affairs of the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure of Turkey.

Turkish officials say the national and international media have reported misleading news about the passage of crude oil tankers through the straits.

“This situation is confirmed by both the relevant EU directive and high-level European state institutions. . However, we do not take care that the insurance company will not answer its responsibility in the event of an accident that may occur if a vessel or cargo subject to sanctions passes through the Turkish straits,” the message said.

Officials noted that according to national law, “crude tankers that cannot provide proper P&I insurance cannot pass through the Turkish Straits, and this rule has been in effect since December 1, 2002.”

“Most of the crude oil ships waiting in the strait belong to the EU, and most of the oil goes to EU ports. Regarding EU embargo rules, it is not clear why EU insurance companies are providing insurance services on crude oil, transported by EU vessels, did not provide the confirmation letter requested by our ministry,” the statement said.

At the same time, ships carrying crude oil, which have already submitted letters of confirmation, have been passing through the strait regularly since December 1.

“The number of ships waiting in the Black Sea in the media news is greatly exaggerated. At the moment, 15 ships are waiting, 11 of them are going to EU ports. We believe that is unacceptable to use this false data as a means of pressuring our country,” the document stressed.

The Turkish Ministry of Transport said tanker owners could also propose a new P&I policy that would cover their sailing time in the straits.

“Our administration and our respective institutions are continuing the necessary negotiations with countries, insurance companies and ship owners. Turkey is making great efforts to ensure maritime trade, open to all of the kind of solutions offered by the host states of these ships,” the officials concluded. .

It will be remembered that in early December, more than 30 countries in the world set a ceiling on oil prices from Russia. The restriction indicates that companies from countries that have agreed to the sanctions cannot provide brokerage, insurance and other services for the sea transportation of Russian oil to third countries, unless the oil that it is sold at a price below $60 per barrel. An embargo on offshore oil supplies from the Russian Federation to Europe also came into effect.
