People hid and buried their treasures during difficult and turbulent times, researchers say.

In Stockholm, archaeologists excavated Viking settlements where they found the remains of 20 houses and structures built in 400 AD, which continued into the Viking Age (800-1050 AD). While excavating a wooden floor in one of the buildings, the team discovered a real 1,000-year-old treasure, writes Heritage Daily.

A ceramic pot was found containing a linen pouch containing pendants of silver coins (used as jewelry) as well as various pieces of jewelry such as eight rings, two hand rings, a ring and two pearls.

In addition, objects such as arrows, core stones and ornate amulets were found.

Some coin pendants are of European origin from England, Bohemia and Bavaria, in addition to five Arabic coins (dirhams), suggesting an extensive trade network.

One of the coins dates back to the 10th century AD and was minted in the city of Rouen in Normandy, France. According to Professor Jens Christian Moesgaard of Stockholm University, this type of coin was previously known only from drawings in an 18th-century book.

“It’s something you probably only experience once in your lifetime. Why the treasure was put aside remains a mystery to researchers, with one interpretation by archaeologist John Hamilton suggesting that people hid and buried their treasures during difficult and turbulent times,” says Maria Lingstrom from the National Historical Museum of Sweden.
