Scientists have discovered the remains of buildings that can be linked to the sanctuary of Poseidon, dating back to the time of archaic Greece.
A team of Greek and Austrian archaeologists in southern Greece found the temple of Samian Poseidon, written about by the ancient Greek writer Strabo. Artnet reports.
The ancient geographer, philosopher and historian mentioned the sanctuary, which dates back to the ancient Greek period from 700 to 480 BC, in his encyclopedic Geographica, a work he completed around 20 BC.
It is noted that archaeologists have excavated large sections of the building’s foundation 9.4 meters wide with heavy stone walls 0.8 meters thick. The remains date back to the 6th century BC.
“The elongated large building cannot be anything other than the temple of archaic Greece, located on the site of the sanctuary of Poseidon, probably dedicated to the god himself,” the scientists said.
Fragments of a laconic roof and a marble perirchanterion (a pool of water used for rituals) confirm that the building belongs to the Archaic period. The team also discovered other architectural features typical of ancient temples, including an antechamber and two interior spaces, one of which was a cella filled with a “thick layer of tiles.”
