The Chinese apparatus discovered that an ancient ocean once existed on the Red Planet in the region of Utopia.
China’s Tianwen 1 orbiter has found evidence of an ancient ocean on Mars. Space.com reported it.
Specifically, launched on July 23, 2020, Tianwen 1 and the Zhurong rover reached Mars orbit on February 10, 2021. Both vehicles sent 1,480 gigabytes of raw data back to Earth – some of it supports the hypothesis that an ancient ocean once existed in the Utopia region, a vast Martian plain.
Scientists analyzing the data discovered the presence of hydrated minerals in a hard mineral layer on the surface of the soil, which usually forms as a result of the evaporation of water in the soil. The find confirms that there was “significant liquid water activity” in this region over the past billion years.
Experts also determined that Martian soil has high strength and low friction parameters, indicating erosion caused by wind and water.
In addition, scientists discovered underground ice deposits beneath Utopia Planitia.
It was previously reported that James Webb took the first images and spectra of Mars.
