The Australian Nullarbor Plain was covered by a tropical ocean approximately 14 million years ago.
Researchers from Curtin have discovered, using modern satellite imagery, the remains of an ancient coral reef several million years old. It reports on Earth’s surface processes and landforms.
In particular, groups of scientists are attracted by the reef-like landform, which consists of a circular raised ring.
“The ring-shaped ‘hill’ cannot be explained by extraterrestrial influence or any known deformation processes. But it retains the original microbial texture and features commonly found in the modern Great Barrier Reef,” said study author Dr. Milo Barham.
Experts also note that the plain is a particularly fruitful area for geological research, as it is hardly affected by erosion.
“Unlike many parts of the world, large areas of the Nullarbor Plain have remained largely unchanged by weathering and erosion over millions of years, making it a unique geological canvas that captures ancient history in fascinating ways. ,” Barham added.
On the surface, thanks to relatively stable conditions, the Nullarbor Plain has preserved a large number of meteorites, which allow a glimpse into the past, into the origins of our solar system.
It was previously reported that a 1.8 million-year-old tooth belonging to an early human species was discovered in Georgia.
