Sojourn ready for action. As a former Overwatch captain, Sojourn has the skills to plan, lead and execute attacks on opponents.
The 33rd heroine in the cast offers unique mid-range gameplay and a skill set full of mobility and artillery. The Senior Hero Designer Josh Noh is at the forefront of her gameplay development, and the narrative designer Miranda Moyer wrote several of Sojourn’s lines. They came to talk to us a little more about her concepts and playstyle.
Electric cannon
The Railgun’s primary fire is a fast projectile that generates energy on hit. The energy that Sojourn generates with the primary fire charges the secondary, which is an impact shot that consumes stored energy. “Sojourn started with the Railgun”, recalls noh. “We wanted to make a mid-range hero with a focus on accuracy but fun for players of all skill levels.” Sojourn can be difficult to play—the better the aim, the more efficient the Railgun, so the skill ceiling is pretty high and relies heavily on the Railgun’s secondary fire.
the style of match it highlights your personality. “Sojourn is that detail-oriented, meticulous type of person, and I think that is reflected in skills that require a lot of precision. She is a brilliant strategist and certainly follows the ‘measure twice and cut once’ philosophy.” moyer.
Disruptive Shot
Disruptive Shot is an area-of-effect ability that traps enemies and consumes their health. Sojourn can use it to improve Rail Cannon’s efficiency. Early prototypes of this ability did a lot of damage to barriers, but in the end, we chose to make it a complement to secondary fire. “Disruptive Shot has evolved from a barrier breaker to an enemy slowdown that makes secondary fire easier.”
It’s best to keep an eye on Sojourn: if you get stuck in Disruptive Shot, she’s probably targeting you. “Sojourn’s cyber skills help eliminate variables,” explains moyer“Disruptive Shot’s slowness allows her to shoot more accurately, reducing the chance of miss.”
Power Swipe
Sojourn’s Power Slide gives her a lot of mobility. It’s a fast slide that can be canceled at any time with a sky-high jump. If used correctly, it can be a quick way to reposition heroin. “We wanted to add a vertical element to her abilities to facilitate access to high places and cement her role as a fast-damage hero,” she says. noh.
“Her abilities are integrated into her cybernetic body, helping her to fulfill her goals,” he explains. moyer. “Sojourn has made numerous cybernetic enhancements over a lifetime, starting out of necessity as a child. Over time, she ended up implementing more cybernetic improvements when she joined the army.” She chose these abilities to be the most efficient combatant possible — she’s the complete opposite of Genji, who was forced to have a cybernetic body. Her cybernetic body and her abilities are tools to achieve an end, but what matters is only her goal.
Overload (Supreme)
Sojourn’s ultimate ability automatically recharges Rail Cannon’s energy for a short period, allowing fire to pierce through enemies.
Overload is another example of how aiming and mechanical skill are well rewarded when playing Sojourn. When activating her ultimate, Railgun’s secondary fire allows her to quickly take out enemies with charged shots. “We wanted it to look like an instant-hit version of Genji’s Dragonblade,” comments noh. “You have a short amount of time to put on a show… or get it all wrong.”
We expect her gameplay to evolve, but we’ve already noticed some patterns throughout the tests we’ve done. “She probably won’t be a flanker, but it’s easier for teams to split up in 5v5 compositions. You can attack from wider angles, and that’s where Sojourn’s mobility comes into play.” The Power Swipe allows her to take on enemies and then retreat to the team when she needs help. “We look forward to seeing how people play with Sojourn in our beta on April 26th! We know she has a high skill ceiling.” noh“so the team will keep an eye on her performance at different levels to make her accessible to everyone.”
This is a special moment for the team, because we believe Sojourn represents what makes Overwatch special, both as a game and as an idea. The world is always in need of new heroes, and it’s up to you to decide whether to heed the call.
