European Commission came back to lay eyes on the footprints Cell Phones and aims to force companies to supply at least 15 different spare parts within five years of selling the device to users.

Consumers are expected to be able to purchase batteries, screens, chargers, back covers or SIM trays during this period.

In defense of users

According to the projects proposed during the week, European Commission wants to increase the battery life of phones and the availability of spare parts.

The measure is also expected to reduce the region’s carbon footprint: extending the life cycle of phones would be equivalent to taking 5 million cars off European highways, according to Financial Times.

MPs argue that forcing manufacturers to produce products that are more durable and easier to repair should reduce e-waste and increase recycling.

In the event that batteries cannot be provided within five years, teams must undergo a series of additional tests to ensure their durability. For example, they want to check if devices reach 80% of their rated capacity after 1000 charge cycles. This will also force software updates to not negatively impact battery life.

green footprint

If proposals are accepted within Europe Later this year, a new energy efficiency label will also be introduced on smartphones and tablets, which will function in the same way as TV and home appliance labels in the region.

The energy label will indicate the likely battery life of the phone or tablet, and will also include information about the protection of the device from water and dust, and even a rating for the phone’s resistance to accidental drops.

The current regulations, if approved, will exclude foldable devices and equipment designed to provide high security.

These projects are expected to be discussed in the coming weeks.
