Japan’s Newly Appointed Digital Minister Taro Kono Declares Symbolic War diskettestill in effect today in hundreds of government procedures in Japan.
Japan’s public administration requires the use of floppy disks and similar storage devices in about 1,900 application procedures and other forms, Kono reported on her social media, despite the sale diskette it was discontinued in 2011.
“We declare war on him”
“Digital Minister declares war on floppy disks,” joked the media minister, the Japanese politician with the most social media followers, over 2.5 million accounts, on his Twitter profile.
Kono took over as head of the Digitization Agency following a cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in early August and about a year after the organization became one of the pillars of digitization policy. The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the country’s shortcomings in this regard.
This Kono crusade is against diskette seeks to “change the rules” so that these roughly 2,000 processes can be done online, and to transform the outdated architecture of Japanese bureaucracy that prevents it from being digitized.
The Japanese minister released his statement of intent the day after the working group met to look into the matter and amend the rules to require, for example, certain data to be sent on cassettes, CDs or minidiscs.
respected on the web
Kono’s humorous tone has made his social media profiles very popular. His first message after his appointment as Minister of Digitalization was a joke about the widespread use of faxes in the country.
Kono was one of the candidates who ran in the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) primary last September to succeed Suga and become prime minister, a race that Kishida won.
Kono was Minister of Defense and Foreign Affairs under the government of the recently deceased Shinzo Abe. EFE
